Chapter Twelve

Cooper tried to get comfortable but found it nearly impossible in the webbed seat of the C-130 cargo plane. Her leg was bothering her big-time, and she really needed a bathroom, but no way was she using the honeypot to do her business. She’d get up and walk around to relieve the pain in her leg, but cargo was stacked in the middle, which made walking with two good legs tricky, let alone one.

Axe sat next to her, snoozing away. How could he sleep with the roaring hum of the engines and the vibration of the prop line? Of course, he was dead tired after driving his Harley all night. He really was her port in a storm, and she couldn’t imagine her life without him. She chuckled as she thought about his telling her that she was a miracle and God had a plan for her. His religious views were very odd compared to hers.

She believed in God and all, but she’d never really thought much about Him. Oh, she’d done her share of praying in the last four years. And there were numerous times she had felt His influence and promptings, but she didn’t have the perspective Axe had. Not that they’d spent a lot of time talking about God. But she could tell by what he said and the way he led his life that he had deep religious beliefs. She admired him for his convictions. He didn’t drink, didn’t gamble, and didn’t seem affected by those around him who did. He was a man of action and a straightforward guy, except when it came to his family.

She thought that rather odd. Didn’t Mormons take great pride in being family oriented? At some point and when the time was right, she’d ask him once again about his family and what the deal was with them. She studied the Navy SEAL beside her.

His head lolled to one side. The whiskers on his cheeks and along his chin line had grown back. Even his goatee seemed fuller with stubble filling in the middle of his chin near his bottom lip. For a moment, her eyes lingered on his full, chapped lips. He had a tendency to bite them together while thinking. She wondered what kissing him would feel like. Would his mustache tickle? His stubbly beard prick? And would his kisses send shivers down her spine like Tom’s had?

Oh, Tom.

Her heart grew heavy. What was she doing having romantic thoughts of kissing Axe when Tom had died only two days ago? And even though he’d been married to her best friend for two years, Cooper hadn’t known that. Tom’s death left a deep ache in her heart.

Axe’s head moved, and he mumbled something under his breath, but soon his little snores started again. Axe and Tom were so very different. Axe felt at home outdoors, while Tom enjoyed office work. Tom loved his family. His father had passed away, but he’d relied on his mother. He had his lawyer brother, Jason, who lived in California.
